How to Avoid a HIPAA Compliance Fine
For some time, the ChiroCode Institute and its consultants have warned subscribers that when it comes to HIPAA compliance, it’s not just the names and addresses that matter—it’s the compliance. If you can demonstrate that you are helping yourself to maintain HIPAA compliance by careful documentation and proper procedures, you can go a long way toward avoiding being fined by the HIPAA squads.
"Can a Physical Therapist use Evaluation and Management (E/M) codes to report evaluations?"
Our answer:
"No. Only the Doctor of Chiropractic can use the E/M codes. A Physical Therapist can use codes 97001 for Physical Therapy Evaluation and 97002 for Physical Therapy Re-evaluation to report their evaluations."
We apologize for this incomplete answer. The complete answer is that only recognized PHYSICIANS (including DCs, MDs, DOs) can use E/M codes to report evaluations.
