In his recent ChiroCode Webinar, Medicare Compliance Officer Dr. Ron Short reported that although the Affordable Care Act puts chiropractic under closer scrutiny, it does offer specific benefits. One of these is the Provider Non-Discrimination Provision.
“A group health plan and a health insurance issuer offering group or individual health insurance coverage shall not discriminate with respect to participation under the plan or coverage against any health care provider who is acting within the scope of that provider’s license or certification under applicable State law.”
This section will go into effect on January 1, 2014. What is important to understand is that the assurance of non-discrimination in terms of participation and coverage effectively requires that doctors of chiropractic not be discriminated against in the provision of any “essential benefit” that is within their scope of practice.
