1-Year Delay Proposed for ICD-10 Compliance
|
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has proposed a new rule that would delay required ICD-10 compliance by one year--from Oct 1, 2013 to Oct 1, 2014.
The ICD-10 compliance date change is part of a proposed rule that would:
- adopt a standard for a unique health plan identifier (HPID),
- adopt a data element that would serve as an “other entity” identifier (OEID), and
- add a National Provider Identifier (NPI) requirement.
Some provider groups have expressed serious concerns about their ability to meet the October 1, 2013 compliance date. CMS and HHS believe the change in the compliance date for ICD-10, as proposed in this rule, would give providers and other covered entities more time to prepare and fully test their systems to ensure a smooth and coordinated transition among all industry segments.
The concerns were partly based on difficulties with implementing a new standardized health claims form, known as Version 5010, for electronic health transactions. Providers need to implement Version 5010 before they can start using ICD-10.
The full press release can be found on the CMS Website.

PPACA and the “Supremes”—The Wait Begins
|
Depending on your political persuasion, the period between now and June will be a time of nail-biting over the fate of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Acts (PPACA). Proponents of health care reform worry that the fruits of their lengthy and expensive fight will be overturned and wasted. Opponents to PPACA, which they generally refer to as “ObamaCare,” fear it will take the form of a heavy yoke, which they see as hanging above health care industry, waiting to descend and crush health care as we know it under the weight of a clumsy and burdensome Federal government. In June, the Court will release its findings, and PPACA will enter a new phase. There are hints, but no certainties, about what will happen when the Justices rule one way or the other."

Description of NEC
|
I can't find the description anywhere of NEC. What is it, and where is it described in my ChiroCode DeskBook? Since "NOS" is for "not otherwise specified," should we try to stay away from using codes tagged with NOS?
