1. Was It A Reprieve, or a Pause Before
The Storm?
By Rick Lehtinen
Ask five Chiropractors about healthcare reformation, and you will get
six opinions. So much of the healthcare overhaul has been conducted behind
closed doors and under the influence of lobbyists that there is real mystery
about what it will all mean. The election of a Republican senator from
Massachusetts has now upset briefly the balance of power, so that at least the
current proposals will not likely not come upon us suddenly.
The question is, "What will become of Chiropractic?" Soon,
hopefully, government auditors will read government studies, and determine that
as a primary intervention for many complaints, Chiropractic is first rate, and
it's low cost and high quality will move it to a star billing in this brave new
world where each bares the healthcare costs of all.
Sadly, I don't trust this will be the case. We occasionally glance the
newspapers in other countries, and in the UK, homeopathy is treated much as
Chiropractic is here--a distant cousin to the "real" healthcare
offered by allopathy. UK debate rages about whether or not homepathy works, and
whether it is based on science. Occasionally, a study will emerge from this
group or that which declares that homeopathy does not work, and is perhaps
dangerous.
The difference is that in the UK, homeopathy and other alternatives are already
bought at taxpayer expense. Thus everyone has a voice, alternative healthcare
consumer or not. As a result, homeopathy is at real risk, while Chiropractic is
only partly so here (tried to get paid recently for E-Stim in Oklahoma?) We
don't know how the healthcare dust-up will turn out, but if the responsibility
to pay the bill further shifts to all taxpayers, prepare to have to defend our
industry (in the face of entrenched players) like never before.
2. The Office
Compliance Program - The Ultimate Protection
Imagine that you have a Medicare contractor come into your office and audit all
of your Medicare records. The contractor leaves after a few days and you
don't hear from them for 18 months. When you do finally hear from them it
is in the form of a letter demanding immediate repayment of $1.5 million in
overpayments.plus interest.
This actually happened to a chiropractor and it is happening to other doctors,
to one degree or another, all over the country today. An office
compliance program will significantly reduce your risk of experiencing this and
will even reduce the chance that you will be fined.
Dr. Short will explain to you why an office
compliance program is important and how it can offer you protection from fines
and penalties from federal agencies. He will discuss the essential
elements of the compliance program and how they work together to protect you
and help you keep the money that you have been paid. If you are under
review (and if someone is requesting records you are under review) you
need to listen to this webinar!
3. Jerry Rice and Chiropractic -
A Top NFL Receiver Credits Much of His Success to Chiropractic
Care
Former
NFL wide-receiver Jerry Rice says, ""If I had everything in
alignment, I knew I could play my best football." His training routine
included twice-weekly chiropractic adjustments, which helped his body recover
from all the hard hits and countless tackles. Because he firmly believed
in the benefits of chiropractic, his teammates began to favor this natural care
over the medications that trainers traditionally give. "I wanted to set
the standard within football," said Rice. "I knew if chiropractic
helped me put up outstanding numbers, it could help my teammates do the
same."
Our
exciting mini-series on collections continues!
In Part 1 of our mini-series, we addressed one of the quickest and simplest
ways that you as a health care provider can improve your collections in 2010 -
by fixing the Assignment & Lien Process in your office.
In Part 2, we turn our attention to "nuts and bolts." Part 2
builds on the basic foundation concepts presented in Part 1.
The point is that providers everywhere seem to be saying the same thing -
"In 2009, my collections went down 10%," or "In 2009, my
collections went down 30%." In some cases, we've heard providers
reporting drops in collections rates of 40%-50%!!!
Do you want to stop this decline and start reversing this trend? If so,
this special 2-Part Series is a MUST.
The 2-part webinar is part of the Grow Your Practice and Get Paid series.
Grow Your Practice and Get Paid is a nationwide series being promoted by the
ChiroCode Institute, Find-A-Code.com, American Medical Billing Association,
Medicfusion EMR, and National Injury Diagnostics. Others are welcome.
5. ChiroCode and Avazzia Announce
"Body Electric 2010" Seminar Schedule
ChiroCode and Avazzia have joined forces to
provide Chiropractors new technology and therapies that will increase their
practice revenue by giving patients new relief from acute and chronic pain. The
FDA-approved Avazzia Biofeedback Electro-Stimulation Technology (BESTTM) uses
micro-current stimulation, enhanced by bio-feedback, to provide relief of pain
from a myriad of disorders. Most insurance plans will pay for home units for
patients to use between client visits. A series of accredited two-and one-half
day seminars are now being scheduled nationwide, with 14 CEUs offered by the
Natural Therapies Certification Board for each seminar attended.
The next seminar is set for Dallas, TX, the weekend of February 12-14, 2010..
Speakers will include Tim Smith, developer of the technology, Dr. Stan Wolfe,
expert in microcurrent therapy physiological effects, and Drs. John and Lorry
Hache, who will provide instruction in clinical applications. An additional
seminar is scheduled in Tampa on February 26-28.
Seminar cost with early registration is $250 (rising to $499 within 10 days of
the event). An additional 25% discount is offered to those who have already
purchased an Avazzia device. To RSVP, Call 214-575-2820, (Fax 214-575-2824), or
email info@avazzia.com.. The Dallas
seminar will be held at the Avazzia Corporate offices, 13154 Coit Rd, Suite
200, Dallas, TX. Affordable lodging is nearby.
We at ChiroCode Institute continue to ask the hard questions to dig out truth
from the mountains of changes coming. The spotlight we hosted on February
2, 2010 was a good reminder on how to navigate the EMR/EHR waters. The web site
http://www.cchit.org/ is the certification
entity to help you determine if your vendor is planning on being EHR
certified.
Remember the old days when all banks had their own ATMs and funds couldn't be
redirected or transferred from one bank to another. We are in a similar
phase over next several years where the goal is to have your Health Record be
accessible by any provider. That is one of the long term goals of
EHR. This Spotlight is very helpful for you to determine how much time
you should put into this right now as well as some of the challenges we face in
the Chiropractic community.

Have you identified all 25 pieces for
Stage 1 (2010-2011)?
Are they ALL actually certified as EHR?
Have you verified that they're all
actually certified?
Do they all fit and work together
seamlessly?
The vendors you're dealing with --will
each of them agree that you have all of the pieces . and that they all
integrate and work together?
Will you be substantially using all
functions?
