The Office of the Inspector General (OIG), has its own Most Wanted list. Click here. Digging through the list, and an associated list of Captured Fugitives, reveals something interesting. Not one of the heavy hitters in Medicare Fraud is associated with Chiropractic. Most appear to be operators or former operators of Durable Medical Equipment providers, or operators of clinics that billed for services not performed, sometimes paying money to patients who said they received treatments that were not administered. Often, the alleged fraud amounted to millions.
Which begs the question—if the worst offenders, those worthy of the Most Wanted List, are not Chiropractors, why is CMS spending so much time and effort putting pressure on our industry?
